Klaviyo Category RFM: Write a More Relevant Email Brief

A customer can keep buying from your store while going quiet in one product category. That difference matters when you write an email. A broad “We miss you” message can sound strange to someone who bought another product yesterday.

Use Migma to build a category-specific email from reviewed Klaviyo findings. Start with the product context and the reader's next useful action, then check the actual audience in Klaviyo. A model label should inform the brief without becoming an unsupported statement about the person.

This workflow is published by Migma. It is an editorial method for turning data into creative, not an independent platform ranking or a tested revenue claim. Product facts were checked on October 16, 2026.

What category RFM changes about the brief

RFM means recency, frequency, and monetary value: how recently customers bought, how often, and how much they spent. Klaviyo's October 13 product update describes running up to four models for individual product categories, each with its own conversion metric and thresholds.

That is a specific product capability, not evidence that every account has identical access or useful data. Confirm availability and configuration in your account before planning around it. The update also explains the underlying RFM concepts.

The creative implication is straightforward: a category purchase gap and a whole-store purchase gap are different situations. Do not write the second story when your evidence supports only the first.

Turn the model finding into a bounded statement

Ask the data owner to provide a short finding in ordinary language. It should identify the category, which transactions count, the period examined, and the important exclusions. Keep the evidence in the brief instead of passing over only a segment name.

For an invented example, imagine a homeware store whose customers buy coffee supplies regularly but replace serving trays much less often. A category model might surface a group for review. That alone does not establish that those customers are unhappy, need a replacement, or want a discount.

Separate what you know from what you propose:

Brief elementSuitable wording
Observed contextThis audience has a longer purchase gap in the reviewed category
Unconfirmed explanationWe do not know whether they need another item
Reader helpShow the current range and explain what changed
Claim to avoidYou have stopped shopping with us
Audience checkConfirm category definition, recent purchases, and marketing eligibility

The table is a proposed planning tool. It is not a model output or an observed customer result. Ask the responsible owner to replace every assumption with the facts available for the actual campaign.

Draft a useful category message in Migma

Review Migma's brand context, including current products, voice, references, and instructions. Then supply the approved category finding alongside a specific creative request.

A useful brief might ask for a short email introducing the current serving-tray range, with one honest reason to browse, the approved product imagery, and one category-page action. Ask Migma to avoid statements about a recipient's emotions or motives. Keep private analytical labels out of reader-facing copy.

Here are two original copy directions for that hypothetical brief:

  • Subject: “A closer look at our serving trays.” Preview: “Materials, sizes, and details to help you choose.”
  • Subject: “Find a tray that fits your table.” Preview: “Compare the current range before deciding.”

Neither requires inventing urgency or pretending the customer has left the brand. If you use an incentive, have its owner approve the amount, eligibility, expiry, and redemption path separately. A purchase-gap label does not justify a discount by itself.

Review the destination and audience together

A category email needs a matching destination. Open the current collection page and check its products, stock, market availability, and explanation. The same message may be unhelpful where the featured range cannot be purchased.

Ask the Klaviyo owner to review current segment membership and eligibility near the send. A reader may have purchased again after the data extract used for the brief. Check how overlapping campaigns and recent orders should affect the actual audience rather than encoding those decisions only in copy.

Migma's export guidance documents Klaviyo HTML export and a beta editable-template option. The destination can change wrappers or variables, so inspect the exported version. Exporting a template does not establish the audience or send the campaign.

Review results at the same level as the question

Before sending, agree on the decision the campaign is meant to inform. If the question concerns interest in one category, an overall open rate is an incomplete answer. Have the analytics owner define the relevant action and reporting period, then keep those definitions attached to the result.

Do not claim the email caused every later category purchase merely because a customer received it. Record what the report can establish and what remains uncertain. Compare findings using the same audience and measurement definitions.

Run Migma Email Preflight, resolve the relevant findings, and inspect a final-platform test before launch. Preflight helps review content and rendering; it cannot validate your RFM model or promise inbox placement. Start the next Migma brief from the reviewed category lesson, not from an unexplained label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a category purchase gap mean someone left the brand?

No. They may still buy other products, or simply not need another item in that category. Use the reviewed finding as context and avoid statements about motives that the data cannot establish.

What does RFM stand for?

Recency, frequency, and monetary value. Klaviyo describes category models with their own conversion metric and thresholds. Confirm your actual account configuration and which transactions count before using a finding in a brief.

Should every at-risk category audience receive a discount?

No. First decide what useful help the email can provide. Any incentive needs approved terms and audience eligibility; a model label alone does not establish that a discount is needed.

Does exporting Migma creative to Klaviyo send the campaign?

No. Review the exported template, then confirm the actual audience, sender, variables, timing, and final-platform test in Klaviyo. Template export and campaign sending are separate steps.
